Omar Rodríguez
In 1999, Omar Rodríguez, Capucas coffee producer, wanted to share his knowledge on the cultivation and commercialization of successful coffee with other Capucas farmers, mainly family members. The same year the Cafetalera Capucas Limitada Cooperative, COCAFCAL was founded. Within the next ten years, many small farmers joined, and now, the cooperative has more than 700 members, who actively participate in the vision and mission of COCAFCAL. “There is still great potential for new members,” says Omar Rodríguez Romero, general manager of the cooperative. “Being small producers is our guarantee of good agricultural practices and the best quality for our customers“, he adds.
The cooperative offers its members numerous services including the nursery for the production of plants of 11 varieties of Arabica. Plants are sold to members who need to start a new plantation or replace old plants in existing plantations. The production of organic and organic fertilizers is one of the mission of the cooperative in order to make the organic certification accessible to the largest number of producers. The cooperative encourages diversified production with support for the production of honey to be sold in the local market.
The social projects for the local community are numerous, among which the flagship is the start of the first virtual teleconferencing university installed in the rural areas of the Copan departments where in January 2017 the first university courses began in business administration, micro finance and pedagogy.
